Final Results
NorCal regatta # 5 (the Appleton Regatta) was sailed at
The San Francisco Yacht Club on the weekend of March 9 and 10. 18 teams
participated. The winning team was University High School (San
Francisco), followed by Marin Catholic HS (Kentfield, CA) and Redwood HS
(Larkspur, CA). 6 races were sailed on Saturday, with variable
conditions. A small storm front rolled through San Francisco Bay, so
winds ranged from 5 knots to 20 knots, with some higher gusts and
oscillations in the breeze. By mid-afternoon there was a 4.5 knot ebb
tide, adding an element of challenge to the sailing tactics. After a
very rainy Saturday night, Sunday dawned clear and sunny. Through most
of Sunday's 4 races the breeze was consistently 8 - 10 knots with minor
oscillations. Tide remained a factor, but was less important on Sunday
than on Saturday.
Partially in response to the comments posted to the PCISA list, judges
were on the water both days. At the competitors meeting on both Saturday
and Sunday mornings the Race Committee and the Judges stressed the
importance of avoiding collisions, and the necessity of protesting
and/or exoneration when there is contact between boats. The Race
Committee and Judges (and, undoubtedly, the boat owners) would like to
compliment the sailors for their racing skills in this regatta. It was
clear that they took to heart the concerns expressed, because mark
roundings were generally very clean, with boats looking for
opportunities to round cleanly rather than attempting to jam their bows
into spaces where there was no room.
