CORONADO WINS, CALIFORNIANS ROMP IN MALLORY CUP

SAN FRANCISCO---Teams from the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association led by Coronado (Calif.) High School's defending champions swept the first four places in the Mallory Cup National Doublehanded Championships May 11-12.

Senior Mikee Anderson, with sophomores Lauren Usrey and Tinja Anderson alternating as crew, won the A division while senior Brian Haines and sophomore crew Blaire Herron placed second in the B division. Jon Nass was the alternate skipper. The coaches are Willem Van Waay and Kate Sheehan.

The event was based at the Treasure Island Sailing Center. Winds were 8 to 22 knots, with flat water and minimal tidal effect.

Freshman Adam Roberts, the current Junior Sabot national champion, won the B division for Point Loma High School, which was second overall on the added strength of senior Ryan Lorence's third place in A.

Newport Harbor and Santa Barbara finished third and fourth, followed by Milton (Mass.) Academy and Tabor Academy of Marion, Mass. The fifth PCISA entry, Bishop's School of La Jolla, was seventh.

Twenty teams qualified for the event through district competitions. Each A and B entry sailed 16 races in CFJ dinghies provided by the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation, San Francisco YC, St. Francis YC and the Robert Louis Stevenson School. The competitors used sails donated by Roy E. Disney to the California International Sailing Association (CISA).

This regatta was the first time that a high school national championship was held at the Treasure Island Sailing Center, and conditions could not have been better. Spectators can see the entire course from shore.

While the continued success of the California schools was impressive, the New England schools showed resurgence. High school sailing continues to grow, with new teams joining in each of the seven national districts. More than 250 teams with 3,000 sailors competed for a chance to go to the nationals. This year the La Porte (Tex.) High School team qualified for the nationals in its first season.

The Coronado sailors will defend their Baker Cup national team race championship at Detroit May 25-26.
