ISSA Team Racing Nationals
Baker Trophy

Grosse Pointe YC
Grosse Pointe, MI
24-26 May 2002

Conditions:
Saturday: Overcast with showers, winds East 15-18 kts, gusty, lots of square chop. A 66 race, 12 team round robin was sailed with one the water observing. There were 3-4 protests which resulted in 2 race being overturned. The most interesting was the St. Georges vs. Newport Harbor race where all six boats went around the lower mark of the reverse "N" course incorrectly. Half way up the last windward leg, the St. George's kids figured out their error, returned to the mark and corrected themselves to seal the win. At the completion of the round-robin, the schools were divided into a final four (Tabor Academy (MA), Milton Academy (MA), Jesuit HS (LA), Newport Harbor HS (CA)), a middle four ( defend champions Coronado HS (CA), Univ. of San Diego HS (CA), the Key School (MD), and Martin County HS (FL), and a lower four (St. Georges school (RI), Anacorte HS (WA), St. Petersburg HS (FL), and St. Ignatius HS (IL)).

Sunday: Sunny, winds southerly 7-10 kts. Less chop. The championship final four raced a double round robin, the middle and lower fours raced a single round-robin. The regatta came down the final race between Tabor and Milton. Milton's win in the final 10 yards of the reverse "N" course pulled them into a tie with Tabor and based upon head-to-head records, Milton prevailed and earned their first National Team Racing Championship (Baker Trophy). Overall, all three New England squads represented our district proudly. Next year's Baker is in the Pacific District, mostly likely at Treasurer Island in San Francisco Bay. More details to follow
